The value of Sleep Away camp

With camp just around the corner I find myself getting the kids stuff ready. The big thing– the trunks. Boy, when you pack those trunks and put your kids stuff in it that’s as good as saying goodbye. My boys keep a couple of extras on socks and underwear, a shirt or two and shorts but everything else they own goes into that trunk. And when the trucking company comes to pick it up, you can begin to sense the loss of your kids being gone for the summer. Bittersweet. You know they’re having a good time with their camp buddies, but you still miss them like crazy.

But camp — especially sleep-away Camp— offers them a great opportunity to explore their independence and make decisions for themselves. Fight their own battles and begin on that long road toward becoming their own person.
