A moment in camp

I love it when my house is full of kids. I guess it reminds me of camp. The other day I came home in the afternoon and found about a dozen kids in my backyard. Four of my older son’s friends were playing wiffle ball, one of my twins was in the pool with his friends and his twin brother had some crazy football game going with a bunch of kids on the trampoline. Any other parent would probably have gone crazy. Visions of drownings and injuries and lawsuits swimming in their minds.
Truth be told, those visions danced across my mind as well but I tried to push them away. Instead, I focused on how much the scene before me in my backyard reminded me of my days in camp. A million kids, tons of different activities going on and just a whole lot of energy out there. I watched them play for a while, listened to their laughter and eventually drifted off into a deep slumber. In my sleep I was thirteen again, I was back at camp and I was right out there with those kids laughing and running around. It was a short nap, couldn’t have been more than a few minutes….but in that short time it took me back far enough and dug deep enough to find that kid buried inside me.
