The boys are going to camp

The boys are all packed; their duffels are sitting by the front door and we’re about to drive up to camp. As I load up their stuff I have a strange, conflicted feeling inside. I am happy for them. I know they will have a great time being away with their friends. But I am also acutely aware of the void it will leave both in the house and in my heart. I am about to get a taste — a two month taste — of being an empty nester. I better start getting used to it. My big guy is nearly 17 and will be off to college in no time. My little guys (who aren’t so little anymore) will be gone shortly after him. It’s going to be strange to get up and not have to worry about anyone getting out of bed, or what’s for breakfast, or have to hurry one of them for school. Bittersweet…but for two months…I’ll take it.
