Parenting and Modern Communication

The days of old fashioned letter writing are fast becoming a thing of the past. My boys who are in sleep-away camp have taken to emailing me. My son who is at the University of Wisconsin on a summer program tests me regularly. I have not gotten a single letter nor even a phone call. Texts and emails. A handful of years ago I wouldn’t have even known what those are. Scary how fast things are changing. To keep up, I simply text and email them back. I did make one exception, however, when I sent my boys a care package up to camp. In it — along with the baseball cards, comic books and assorted nick nacks — I enclosed a good old fashioned letter.

I didn’t hear any complaints.

  1. I still write notes to people and I’m amazed at what an impact it makes. I think people have forgotten how wonderful it is to pull a real letter out of the mailbox.

  2. It’s amazing in general how our communication has become less formal. My wife and I were just talking about how we communicate with our family more through Facebook and less via telephone. Amazing how life evolves.
