My Meeting with the Cake Boss

An old high school friend of mine was in town the other day. She and her daughter came up from Florida and their first stop was Hoboken. Not for baseball history, not for Sinatra nostalgia—they came for the Cake Boss!!! I had never heard of the Cake Boss — not the person nor the show. But when I pulled up to Carlo’s Bakery (which my GPS) brought me to, I was shocked at what I saw. There was a line two blocks down and wrapped around the block. All these people waiting in line for hours to get a glimpse of this reality TV star and maybe pick up a cupcake or cookie. what has this world come to? But there they were, my good friend and her teenage daughter waiting dutifully in line with all the other star crazed fans waiting their turn to enter the bakery.

Since I had nothing better to do, I joined them and soon we were inside. the whole place was the size of my TV room and it was packed with wall-to-wall people. Fans were taking pictures with the TV reality stars, going crazy, having cake boxes autographed and generally making fools of themselves. We were no exception. The bakery’s shelves were empty–business was good to say the least.

Note to self–if you want a successful business–get a reality TV show!!!!!
