Parenting philosophy

People are always telling me that I’ve got good kids. You did a good job with your kids. Stuff like that. I often ask myself, did I really have much to do with it? I try to set a good example. When they were young I did reward good behavior and punish the bad. But really, how much of that goes into them as they grow older. It’s that whole nature versus nurture argument. I have three boys. Today the oldest is 17 and the other two –twins– are 14. The twins could not be more dissimilar from each other and all three have completely different personalities. I’d like to believe I gave them all the same amount of love and support and encouragement and all that good stuff. Same home, same upbringing and yet all three are very different.

I’m not too sure anymore about how much the nurture element has to do with it. I’m beginning to think it’s got a lot more to do with their inherent nature. My philosophy — give them love and a good home and lots of emotional nourishment and a good education and then….get the hell out of their way and let them be the people they were slated to become.

  1. I do not have kids, but it seems to me you are so right when you say:”….get the hell out of their way and let them be the people they were slated to become.”
    A hug for you Ofer!
