Health Tips for Parents

health-tips-for-parentsWhen it comes to parenthood one of the things that is often overlooked is the health of the parent. In between the day to day tasks of keeping your children healthy, preparing meals, helping children with their homework, chauffeuring them to activities, and of course your adult responsibilities (such as earning a living) who has time to worry about things like exercise, healthy eating, or sleep. Another thing that is often overlooked by parents is the importance of leisure time. While your children may be doing fun activities such as sports, dance… you need to engage in a having a life and spending time with other adults as well. The following is a brief discussion of some basic daily health tips that all parents should follow in order to live a long and healthy life. By following these daily health tips you will improve your quality of life, will feel better, will reduce stress and will have more energy to spend with your children.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is one of the top things that is often overlooked by parents, especially if your little ones are picky eaters. You spend your time preparing meals for them and may end up eating their leftovers or having the same diet as your kids. Most foods that children enjoy are high in sugar, and simple carbs, while not very healthy children tend to have a higher metabolism and are more active than most adults so they are able to burn off the access calories. Parents who eat a similar diet to their children or who eat leftovers will, in most cases gain weight, especially if they are not physically active/have a job where they sit for much of the day. One way to avoid this is to try to encourage your kids to eat more fruits, veggies and whole grains, if they see you enjoying these foods they will be more likely to give the foods a chance and may even enjoy healthy foods. If your kids are very picky you may want to prepare separate meals for you and your children, while not the ideal option you can use this as a teaching moment, to teach your kids about good nutrition.

Healthy exercise for Parents

Healthy exercise for Parents

Exercise

Exercise is one thing that many parents neglect; after all, who has time to go to the gym. While your kids are probably required to take a gym class and school and may also have a physical after school activity, you go to work, sit behind a screen for 8 hours and then come home, do chores and sit in front of another screen, this is not healthy and over time this can decrease your lifespan as well as give you a sluggish feeling. One solution to this is to make exercising a part of your daily routine and to do this with your children, try going to the park after dinner, when your kids are little they will love playing on the playground, as they get older, you can go for hikes or walks, on weekends you can even go on bike rides. Another solution is to incorporate physical activity into your day, if you have a sedentary job, make sure to take a 2 minute walk, every 20 minutes, this will help to get your blood flowing and will keep your muscles healthy.

Sleep

Sleep is one of the most neglected, yet essential parts of modern life. Without proper sleep the body cannot function, the brain cannot unwind, muscle tissue cannot recuperate, and new muscle cannot be made. Parents, especially those who want to stay up late, after the kids go to bed to enjoy the peace and quiet and who then need to get up early to get the kids ready for school will feel the toll of too little sleep on their bodies and over time their bodies will reflect this, with added stress, weight gain… The best solution to this is to have a bedtime for yourself, make sure that you get at least 7 hours of sleep per night, when your kids go to bed you should as well. And for those who think that sleeping in on the weekend can make up for a weeks worth of not sleeping, let me put this myth to rest

Leisure Time

Parenting is the most important job you have but in order to be a good parent you must take time to unwind and spend time with other adults. Have a date night with your spouse, play a sport after work with your friends or just spend time with other parents. No matter what the activity is, it will help your mind to distress and will allow you to process your day to day activities better.

Conclusion

Being a good parent is a difficult job. You must be all things to your kids, a cook, a driver, a tutor, a doctor, and much more. In order to be the best parent you can be you must maintain your health. Daily health tips such as healthy eating, exercise, getting enough sleep and making time for leisure is just the start, although this is the foundation of living a healthier life.
